About Irina Polovodova Asteman

I am marine geologist and micropalaeontologist working with benthic foraminifera and geochemical proxies in coastal sediment archives. My research lies at intersection of several marine disciplines such as marine geology, biogeochemistry, oceanography, ecology and molecular biology. Our coastal waters are changing fast and I am interested in a range of topics from environmental changes, such as bottom water oxygen deficiency, ocean acidification, changes in primary productivity, marine pollution to marine climate variability observed and documented with help of ocean archives. I use marine sediments as archives of such changes and a benchmark for environmental baseline assessment. My study area includes coastal waters, fjords and estuaries. I am also interested in introduction of alien and invasive species of microbial eukaryotes, which are very abundant in ship ballast waters and sediments but remain "hidden aliens" due to their microscopic size.

I also coordinate and teach several undergraduate courses:

  • Introduction to Coastal Ecosystems (MAV108) - BSc level, 2nd year in the Marine Science Program
  • Marine Geology (GVG320) - BSc level, free-standing course
  • Marine Micropaleontology (MG0230) - BSc level, free-standing course
  • Marine Micropaleontology and Paleoceanography (GVM460) - MSc level, free-standing course
