Postdoctor
Department of Political ScienceAbout Fabio Angiolillo
I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Gothenburg and V-Dem Institute. I received my PhD in 2023 in Political Science from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and I was a Visiting Fellow at Cornell University. Personal website at: https://www.fangiolillo.com
My research interests center on comparative politics, political institutions, regime stability and change, and political behaviour. I use political parties to explain episodes of autocratization and authoritarian stability. I enjoy developing advanced research designs using a variety of data and methods including causal inference, panel data, text-as-data, archival, web scraping, and case studies including surveys and fieldwork interviews.
I frequently apply my research questions on a global scale, focus on authoritarian regimes, and sometimes work on East Asian politics. I received the 2022 Virginia Gray Graduate Student Award by APSA Political Organisations and Parties Section and the title of Outstanding Research Award by HKU for my dissertation, where I explore the interaction between ruling parties and citizens in party-based autocracies, and the effects on regime survival. In a current project, I investigate historical and contemporary autocratization episodes and how political parties use citizens to seize power.
I co-organize the Authoritarian Political Systems Group (APSG), I am co-convenor of the Authoritarian and Regime Change (ARC) PSA section, and I am member of the Representation editorial board.
