Rasmus Bernander
Researcher
Department of Languages and LiteraturesAbout Rasmus Bernander
I am a field linguist and historical(-typological) linguist. My main research interest revolves around various aspects of grammatical variation and change in Bantu languages, particularly in various Tanzanian Bantu languages, but also from a broader comparative perspective.
Currently, I hold a position as a Researcher in African Languages where I also teach Swahili and other courses on the subject of African linguistics at the department: https://www.gu.se/sprak/afrikanska-sprak
I lead a research project funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (grant P23-0101), focusing on the use and spread of modal expressions in Swahili. The project investigates historical change including contact-induced change (“borrowing”) into Swahili (mostly from Arabic) and out of Swahili into other East African languages.
More information about the project can be found here:
https://www.gu.se/en/research/modality-in-swahili-variation-change-and-transfer
In addition, I am a joint researcher in the Japan-based ILCAA Joint Research Project Diachronic Perspectives on Language Description and Typology in Bantu http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/en/projects/jrp/jrp292
I serve as a subject editor (and incoming editor-in-chief) of the Nordic Journal of African Studies https://njas.fi/njas
I am also a Fellow of the EUTOPIA Young Leaders Academy https://eutopia-university.eu/english-version/young-leaders-academy-yla-1
