Short description

Researchers of political parties at the Department of Political Science focus particularly on the study of political parties and party systems. A common definition of a political party is an organization that, under a shared label, nominates candidates for public elections. However, the role of parties extends far beyond this. They form a cornerstone of the democratic system and also play a central role in many political systems that do not meet the criteria to be considered full democracies.

Research questions

Political parties are dynamic organizations with a complex internal life. They interact with one another, operate at the voter level, and wield influence over decision-making processes. They formulate political agendas, advocate for reforms, and promote ideologies. Through parties, society’s fundamental political conflicts are channeled into an organized and legitimate process of resolution. At the same time, parties are constantly evolving – adapting to new circumstances, with shifting motivations and drivers behind their actions.

The Party Research Programme explores both normative and empirical questions concerning the role of parties within the political system. The research also examines their internal dynamics, organizational development and history, the role of party members, and the impact of digital media on party activity.
