EXPEDITION 2025: Arctic Ocean Currents and Microbial Life in Motion
In July 2025, researchers from Sweden and India will launch a joint Arctic expedition to study ocean circulation, nutrient flows, and microbial ecosystems on the East Greenland Shelf – a region at the frontline of climate change
The cruise includes 37 sampling stations, where scientists will gather:
- Physical oceanography data – temperature, salinity, currents (via CTD and ADCP)
- Nutrient and chlorophyll concentrations
- Microbiological and geochemical samples
- Zooplankton and phytoplankton (via vertical net hauls)
The mission aims to understand biophysical interactions in Arctic waters and how climate change is affecting marine systems and current dynamics in the polar regions.
The expedition will contribute to:
- Polar research in a rapidly changing Arctic environment
- International scientific cooperation between Sweden and India
Open data science: Results will be archived in India’s National Polar Data Centre and made public within two years
Expedition facts: When: 21 July – 4 August 2025
Where: East Greenland Shelf and Denmark Strait
Vessel: R/V Skagerak
Organizer: University of Gothenburg in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (India)
