EXPEDITION 2025: Arctic Ocean Training for Early Career Researchers
This summer, a small team of early career researchers (ECRs) will join an international Arctic research expedition aboard the Swedish research vessel R/V Skagerak to explore the marine environment off the coast of central-east Greenland. The cruise is part of an intensive, hands-on training programme designed to build capacity and collaboration among emerging researchers in Arctic science.
The Arctic is warming at more than twice the global average. Understanding this rapidly changing environment is crucial, not only for polar regions but for the entire planet. This programme is part of a broader initiative to build a new generation of polar scientists who can collaborate across disciplines and borders.
The expedition is jointly organised by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat (SPRS), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the University of Gothenburg, and the NERC Arctic Office, with generous support from the UK Science and Technology Network.
Aims of the programme
The training course, titled "The Arctic Ocean System", offers ECRs practical experience in conducting marine research in the polar environment. It includes:
- Hands-on training in oceanographic and biological sampling techniques
- Guidance in planning and executing fieldwork in Arctic conditions
- Lectures on the coupled Arctic climate system
- Practical experience with CTD, plankton nets, underway sampling, and mooring work
The programme runs alongside scientific work carried out under the UK-led KANG-GLAC project, which investigates how tidewater glaciers are affected by ocean conditions and whether the Greenland Ice Sheet is approaching a climatic tipping point.
