Seminar series

We hold regular series of seminars and workshops on interesting and exciting topics that attract big audiences. These are the core of our scholarly conversation, and are always open to the public. The seminars are given by the Department’s own staff as well as invited guests.

(AFS) General Research Seminar: The General Research Seminar is our joint seminar. It presents innovative research from all branches of political science and also from other subject areas of relevance to the development of political science as a subject.

GenDip: Gender in Diplomacy organizes specialized seminars with researchers and conferences/workshops on the theme of gender and diplomacy.

CERGU: The Centre for European Research at the University of Gothenburg (CERGU) hosts a multidisciplinary seminar series that gathers researchers interested in European studies from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, and The School of Business, Economics and Law. The topics relate to CERGU’s thematic areas: Cultural Borders; Mobility and Migration in Europe; Institutions, Parties, and Movements; External Relations, Security, and Trade.

GEPOP: The Gothenburg Research Group on Elections, Public Opinion, and Political Behavior (GEPOP) organizes seminars that include presentations on research about how political systems influence elections, voter behavior, political parties, participation in politics, citizens’ opinions, the media, and political campaigns.

GLD: Why are some societies able to provide safe and secure environments, good education, adequate health care, and other factors that promote human development while others fail to do so? The seminars at the Governance and Local Development Institute (GLD) focus on the local factors driving governance and development.

International politics: The International Politics (IP) seminar explores a range of research problems with relevance to the study of International Relations (IR), Global Governance (GG), Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA) and Diplomatic Studies (DS). Recurring themes include but are not limited to the sources of order and conflict, the political reach of IOs and international regimes, the inducements for security- and foreign policy, and the role of diplomacy.

PAPP: The Public Administration and Public Policy seminar series aim to present research on the design and implementation of public policies, on the structure of public administration (both at national and comparative perspective as well as sub-national bodies), and the overall concept of “governance”. 

Party research: The party research seminar series is a forum to discuss on-going research ideas on party systems and political parties in their roles as actors and institutions. It covers comparative research on all geographical areas and from all methodological disciplines.

Political theory research: The political theory research seminar series is a forum to discuss research in political theory and political philosophy. That includes normative political theory, the history of political thought, theoretical issues of contemporary problems in societies and public policy, as well as reflection on basic political concepts, methods, and phenomena.

Quality of Government: The Quality of Government (QoG) seminars aim to explore a wide range of topics related to the Quality of Government, including but not limited to transparency and accountability, bureaucracy, corruption, state capacity, development, and public goods provision
